Commissions Process and FAQs

What sort of artwork do you produce on commission?

This is such an important question! Here at House of McLeod, we specialise in abstract, geometric and botanical artwork.

We can't offer a commission service that produces portraits or photo realism, it's simply beyond our artistic ability!

How do I commission an original artwork from House of McLeod?

Fill out the form below and we'll get back to you, usually within 48 hours.

We will most likely ask for some further information from you which will help us determine cost and timing so that you can make an informed decision about whether to commission us to produce a unique artwork just for you.

We will let you know as soon as possible if the work is beyond our scope or ability.

We will send you our Commissions Policy, which forms part of a contract between you and us. This provides further detail about the process.

How does the process work?

Once we have a good understanding of what you would like, we will get back to you with a detailed price and time schedule.

We don't like to ask for upfront deposits, and will only do so in the case of the project requiring what we consider to be a substantial initial outlay.

We will send you a sketch or mood-board or image of similar projects so that we can agree on the overall aesthetic of the piece and agree that we're on the same page before work commences. At this stage, you agree on the process, costs, timing and project brief by accepting the Commissions Contract.

After that, we get to work. We don't like to share progress updates, as art often involves what's referred to as a "messy middle" and this can be somewhat offputting to Clients. We prefer to unveil the artwork when it's complete and allow for any finishing touches. We might check in with you on any specific or challenging details to ensure we are meeting your expectations, but usually any progress updates will be about how we are tracking to the schedule or confirming particular details.

Once you accept the artwork as complete, we will invoice you, according to the agreed contract value including shipping. Once the invoice is paid, we will ship the artwork to you for you to enjoy!

How much will it cost and how long will it take?

This is really difficult to answer as a general question, but we feel it's important to give you some indication of price and time so that you can decide whether you would like to progress to making an enquiry.

Cost depends on size, material, artwork type and anticipated artistic design and production time required. As a guide, an A5 acrylic on paper collage of 4 birds in a tree is usually invoiced at around $80 - 100AUD. A 20 * 24" acrylic mixed media canvas will usually start at around $200 and can exceed $1000AUD for complex or intricate designs. The Commission fee includes all materials and shipping, as well as artist design and production time.

Timing is usually between 4 and 8 weeks from Commission Contract acceptance to the artwork being finished and ready to ship (time does not include shipping). If we think the project will exceed this usual timeframe, we will let you know at the initial stages, as part of the Commissions Contract.

What are my responsibilities?

We provide further detail in the Commissions Contract, but essentially we require you to enter into the contract in good faith that you've made your requirements clear and that you will pay the invoice on completion of the artwork.

The most successful commission outcomes come from transparency and clarity from both parties throughout the process. If you take the time to be as descriptive as you can be about what you would like, including answering our questions about the commission, and if you make clear to us what you do and don't want, we have a great opportunity to work together to create something really special.

Put simply, if you tell us what you want and pay for it, we'll produce an amazing piece of art for you.

What if I change my mind or don't like the finished product?

If you change your mind, and decide to not go ahead with the commission, please let us know as soon as possible.

We understand that circumstances can change and for various reasons you may not be able to go ahead with the commission.

In the case of you changing your mind, we retain all rights to the artwork.

If you don't like the finished product, we will work with you to achieve your desired outcome, in line with the original Commission Contract. If we can't resolve the artwork together to produce a piece that you are satisfied with, we will null and void the contract and retain all rights to the artwork. We will not ask you to pay an invoice for a product you won't receive.

This effectively means that House of McLeod carries the risk of not receiving payment for work undertaken and materials used, so we are making a genuine commitment to producing something you will love.

Six Songbirds

This commission was undertaken in late 2024 and was requested as a representation of family. Bird colours were chosen by the Client and the style is based on a previous commission that the client loved.

All commissions are created with intent and with the utmost respect to the Client's brief. It's truly an honour to create artworks for people and bring their vision to life.
